COST TO COMMISSION AN ARTWORK?

Commissioned pieces are priced based on the size, medium, and complexity of the piece, and the artist's sales history. Commissioned artworks will be more than comparable pieces in the artist's portfolio [in terms of size and medium]. This is due to the fact that the artist must spend time to consult with you about the project, create any necessary preliminary sketches, and take time away from their normal art practice to create your commission.

Before the artist begins working on your commission, we take a 50% non-refundable deposit. This assures that the artist will be paid for their time and materials. Once the piece is complete, we will send you a high resolution image of the work. If you accept it, we will charge your credit card the remaining 50% and ship the piece to you. If for some reason you are not entirely satisfied when you see the image, we can work with the artist to make small changes. There are no returns once you take possession of the art.

Photographs are great reference material when commissioning an artwork. If you don't have a photograph, it's not a problem. You will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the artist to describe exactly what you are looking for.

Can I return a commissioned artwork? No, the artwork has been created to your specific requirements and therefore is non-returnable

WHAT IS THE ARTIST CUSTOM COMMISSION PROCESS?

After filling out the Commission Form, we will follow up within 72 hours to confirm details and provide pricing via the email address you provide. The Artist will work with you to help create a painting perfect for your space! Each custom painting is priced based on your requested details. A 50% non-refundable deposit is required and confirms your order.

Custom paintings are commissioned at a limited quantity each month and have a 3-6 week turnaround. Admin will remain in contact with you throughout process, getting feedback and input for your commissioned Art piece. Admin will make 1-2 revisions based on requests.

The remaining balance will be due once the painting is finished. All sales are final.

ARTIST SHOULD PRICE THERE ARTWORKS?

Making art is about creative experiences that come from within, where commodities are bought and sold, and where so many other factors dictate worth. You are responsible for the costs of materials, packaging, and delivery. Therefore you must set your price to include this cost. As an established artist, you probably already know how much it costs to package and deliver your style of artworks. If in doubt, £10 is usually for smaller pieces and £30 is sufficient for medium pieces . For larger or heavy pieces contact your preferred courier to establish the cost. Check delivery prices carefully as you are wholly responsible for the cost of delivery
We are attracting a growing number of customers from overseas deliver overseas delivery charges for each of your artworks

Follow our basic pricing strategy to get started!
Basic pricing strategy:

  • - Set an acceptable hourly rate
  • - Multiply this by the hours spent creating an artwork
  • - Adding costs for materials on top

For example, if you decided on an hourly rate of £15 and spent 25 hours creating your piece the materials for which cost £100 your calculation would look like this

  • - 25 hours x£15 hourly rate =£375
  • - Material costs =£100
  • - Artwork price =£375 +£100 =£475

Consider the Market Whilst it is of course important to price your artworks on their own merit, it is incredibly important to consider whats going on in the world of art around you:

  • - Consider the pricing of other artworks that are similar to yours by artists who have experienced similar professional success
  • - Compare your art in terms of size, style, medium
  • - Whilst its easy to focus in on your area of the art market, dont make that focus too narrow be aware of how others are pricing their artworks, even if they bear no resemblance to yours. Such knowledge as this is an indicator of the direction that the broader art market may be directed
  • - Think objectively about your art and where it lies in the grand scheme of things
  • - Think objectively - perhaps invite somebody who knows your work, but is not family, or your harshest critic for that matter
  • - Looking for an objective valuation

Limited editions: Setting prices for editions is not much different to the strategy above:

  • - Take the above basic pricing strategy and add value for additional considerations for the entire edition
  • - How much does it cost to produce an entire edition of 50 prints
  • - How many hours do you spend doing this
  • - Then divide this total by the number of editions to get a price per unit
  • - Bear in mind that all editions should ideally sell out

Other factors to consider

  • - Exhibiting success and other accomplishments in the art world
  • - How long you have been selling for
  • - Further costs, including commission and fees and gallery guidelines, need also to be taken into account
  • - If you find yourself consistently selling the majority of your output over an extended period of time
  • - Should consider upping your hourly rate
  • - Applying a 10% increase to your existing prices
  • - Can you justify the price
  • - Can you break it down and explain it to another person
  • - If not, it might make sense to review your pricing

ABOUT PROMOTIONAL DISCOUNTS

If a discount has been applied to your sale, it's because the Buyer / Collector redeemed a special promotional discount while purchasing your work. On occasion, Artist should offer promotional discounts as an incentive for new and returning collectors to explore the constantly changing selection of artwork on our site.

We find that offering promotions from time to time allows artists to gain the attention of collectors previously unaware of their work and a better chance to make future sales.

The discount codes typically give collectors between 5% - 20% off original works, and do not exceed these amounts. For works sold to the trade - interior designers and architects, for example - give tiered discounts of 5% - 20% off original works.

If you sell an original work, artsmarketgallery Art will receive a 30% commission on the final sale price. If a promotional discount code is offered, the discount will be deducted from the price of the artwork and the usual 70/30 split will then be calculated.  It is worth remembering that artsmarketgallery Art’s commission is 30%. This means that very often (even with a discount) you will be earning more through your sales with artsmarketgallery.

It is also important to note that during your initial sign up, you agreed to this condition (included in our official statement of Privacy Policy &. Terms & Condition )

Arts Market Gallery reserves the right to promote and market Original Works of Art and/or Digital Works through the use of sales and/or discounts. The sale or discount amount will apply to the listing price of Original Works of Art and/or Printed Works relating to the Digital Works. After the discount code is deducted from the sales price, our usual commission of 30% will be applied.

CHARGE DUTIES OR TAXES

Various import duties and taxes may be charged by the local customs office, when artworks are imported into the customer's local country. It is worth noting that the customs duty & import charges are often called government charges as they are imposed by the government and are outside of Arts Market Gallery control.

Import duties and taxes may apply?

Whenever artworks (goods) are purchased from outside the customer’s country, duty and tax may have to be paid to the local Customs unless both customer and artists are based in one of the EU member states or within the same country.

Who is responsible for paying import duties and taxes?

It is the responsibility of the customer (Buyer) placing the order to pay any local import taxes and duties. We communicate this clearly at checkout to all customers who may be subject to the additional import fees.

What has changed for UK and EU customers after Brexit?

Article to help our UK and EU based customers prepare for changes that will follow the end of the transition period. In essence, although a deal has been agreed between the UK and the EU you may expect temporary delays with cross-border shipments, as well as extra fees. These may include taxes charged by the government and admin fees from the courier. Please see more on that below.

When goods are entering the UK from the EU (or the other way round), they are presented at customs, and in order to be entered into free circulation, import VAT and, possibly import duty must be paid.

IMPORT VAT

From 1 January 2021, if you are based in the UK and buying from the artists based in the EU country (or the other way round) you will be charged import VAT when goods are entering your country. This is because your purchase from abroad is now considered as an import.

Like normal VAT, import VAT is usually charged at the standard rate applicable in the country e.g. 20% in the UK. Import of the original artwork is subject to a reduced VAT rate in the UK (5%) and in the majority of EU countries (VAT rates do vary between the countries).

Please also note that import VAT is charged not only on the value of the artwork but also on the following:

  • *The cost of shipping and insurance (if applicable)
  • *Customs duty (if any)

What are the import duties and tax by country? Unfortunately the ArtMarketGallery platform is currently unable to accurately estimate and collect import duties and taxes at checkout.
To get an indication of the cost to expect you may want to check an online calculator. Such as Simply Duty, Simply Duty Import Calculator Please keep in mind that these values are only estimated and that we are still seeing some discrepancies between what the calculator says should be charged and what is actually charged
(e.g. calculator estimate would usually apply a standard VAT rate and it will NOT include the individual carrier admin surcharge for example)

Other useful links to EU countries import VAT rates

If you have any doubts, please contact your local customs office for further information before placing your order.

Will ArtMarketGallery reimburse me for the unexpected import tax bill? We are sorry, but at this time ArtMarketGallery is not able to reimburse you for any local import taxes or duties, since those are payable by the importer (ie. the customer). This is why we advise all customers about to place an international order to contact the artist and seek to pre-pay or estimate the import charges ahead of time to avoid surprises. See How can I pay import taxes due on my order section.

If you are based in the UK and you think you have been incorrectly charged import duty or import VAT then you can try to reclaim it from HMRC using the forms below:

If you wish to discuss this further, do get in touch with our support team and we will work on a case-by-case basis to find the best possible resolution.

Will I receive my order if I refuse to pay customs charges?

No, if you decide not to pay the charges and therefore contact the courier/ postal service to refuse the parcel, they will usually hold your item for a period of time (this varies from a couple of weeks to a couple of months), after which your item will be returned to the sender. In order to receive a refund, we will need to confirm that the parcel is on the way back to the artist.

Will I get reimbursed customs charges if I return my order?

If you request a return, ArtMarketGallery will arrange it for you and cover the cost of the return shipment of the artwork back to the artist. Once we confirmed a safe receipt of the artwork, we will issue a refund of the artworks value and shipping cost.
You will be able to reclaim import VAT and customs duties. To reclaim the costs, please use form BOR 286 if Royal Mail or Parcel force delivered the goods, or form C285 if it was a different courier.

You will not be able to reclaim courier handling fees however.  You only pay import VAT and customs duty when goods are imported into the UK, so you wont have to pay these again when sending back/exporting the goods.

We understand import taxes is an exciting subject and you may have more questions. If that the case please do not hesitate to get in touch with the artist or our Support Team on Contact us. We are here to help!
